5Excellent hearing protection  Dec 24, 2009
Received exactly what was expected from a Peltor product. Excellent hearing protection plus extreme comfort. Wore these for the best part of four (4) days (approx. 40 hours) at a defensive handgun course at Front Sight in Nevada and barely noticed them. A little pricey, but well worth it in my opinion.

5Peltor Tactical 7s hearing protector  Nov 19, 2009
I've puchased the Peltor Tactical 7s hearing protector just over a month ago. These are the first set of electronic hearing protectors I have ever used and wished I had purchased sooner. The NRR on my pair is NRR 25 which is lower than the foam earplugs i normally used that had a NRR of 31 but I haven't really noticed a huge difference and I have really sensitive ears! I have only used this pair shooting handguns ( .40 Cal semi-autos ) outdoors and I typically shoot 150 to 200 rds every other day. I'm waiting to use them shooting my 12 gauge. They have worked flawlessly. The 7s returns immediately to normal sound after a shot fired and even works great with rapid fire. They are really easy to adjust and they stay in place when running to different targets. The ability to adjust the sound level so it sounds like you dont even have them on is amazing. I can have a conversation with someone over 30 ft away with no proplem and then the next second I could be shooting. The longest I have worn these is about 3 1/2 hrs straight with no complaints. They do get a little sweaty on me but can be expected from any hearing protector. Not having to take out my earplugs every time I wanted to talk to someone or hear instructions at the range is what really sold me. The protector is made of high quality material's and the battery is really easy to change, if you even have to change it! If you remember to turn them off when done you should never have a proplem. They also buzz a little when they are turned up all the way but it's way to loud for me and I think it's picking up all the sounds around at once. I've also heard they are not as great in an indoor range but I will find out as soon as winter hits. And compared to the prices of other Electronic Hearing Protectors, these were a great deal. Ive seen these sell for nearly $200! I bought mine new for $118 w/shipping. Can't beat that!!!! Try them out!

5Excellent for hunting or tactical situations  Sep 05, 2009
I've been using my Tac7 hearing protectors for several years. The only times it has failed, has been when the (easy to replace) 9 volt battery died. Keep a 9 volt battery and a dime with your range equipment, and you'll be prepared for that. Even when the battery is dead, these are as good as most passive headsets. As others have mentioned, there is a delay for your normal (or enhanced) hearing to return. That's only an issue at an active range. Even then, they work the same as a non-electronic muff. Depending on where I sit at the range, announcements on the loudspeakers can trigger the cut-off. That's not a problem. Sounds that are loud enough to trigger the attenuation, are plenty loud to be heard while the speakers are off.

I went on a guided hunt, and the guide had no hearing protection on. I loaned him my Peltor Tac7s, and he was amazed at how much more he could hear, than his natural hearing. When you take a shot, the sound cuts out before you notice a blast. The amplification comes back fast enough, that you can hear your hits at long range.

My brothers have owned (and I tried) other brands of electronic muff. One had something he found for $30, and he liked it alright for a year. It did not amplify quiet sounds, and it stopped working at all after a year. Another brother bought a muff that amplifies sounds below 85 db, and reduces loud sounds to 85 db (up to the abilities of the -21 sound reduction). They cost as much as the Tac7, and neither of us like them as well. His have held up just as well as the Tac7s, but the "dimmer switch" function just seems unnatural. He has been satisfied, but would have purchased the Peltor if he had tried them both at the range first.

The only disadvantage I've noticed on these muffs, is when you rapidly mount a rifle or shotgun. The large headset that works so well for pistols, can be pushed slightly away from your head by the stock. For a hunter who spends a lot of time at the range, and not so much time hunting with a rifle or shotgun (and only wants to pay for one electronic hearing protector), I recommend these. They offer better sound protection than the slimline versions, and are quite comfortable.

4Nice, but not perfect  Jul 22, 2009
I bought these for use at the range. They are a nice set, but not without their downsides.

Pros:
Very comfortable padding and headband.
High quality construction.
Able to use with microphone and radio.
Able to use with hardhat or helmet with special add on.
Great sound reduction and decent amplification.

Cons:
Very bulky, hard to use with rifles where the sights are low on the butt stock. Fine for scoped rifles.
Long delay (compared to some other electronic ear protection) when the sound is dampened.
Some of the amplified voices aren't as clear as some of the Howard Leight models.

My friend has a Howard Leight Impact Sports, which I highly recommend. I've used them several times at the range. The Impact Sports aren't as comfortable, but if you are only there for a couple of hours, they are fine. [...]
The tactical 7S earmuffs are definitely a nice piece of equipment, but you may also want to consider the Impact Sports. Just a thought.

5No More Knee Jerking  Mar 13, 2009
I love my headphones. Great purchase. I was still knee jerking some when I realized if I shortened the headband all problems are now solved.
When a product delivers as advertised, you don't mind paying the price.
